Gossip Girl Fashion and Style Guide

One of the greatest things about being a fashionable couch potato is Gossip Girl fashion. Like Sex and the City, Gossip Girl style has literally transformed the way people watch TV, treating Gossip Girl like a live action fashion catalogue.

Since Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meister) and Serena VanDerWoodsen (Blake Lively) entered our living rooms via the Upper East side, it’s been a series of headbands, mixed patterns, print hosiery and statement necklaces.

From well-known couturiers Prada, MiuMiu, Louis Vuitton and Valentino, contemporary lines like Milly, Marc Jacobs and Gryphon to affordable pieces from Forever21 and RichRocks, Gossip Girl fashion has reinvented preppy style, adding high fashion detailing, and trendy accessories to aspirational fashion once reserved for the runway.

And Sarah Jessica Parker.

Uber preppy Blair Waldorf singlehandedly made headbands cool again, making names like Jennifer Behr and Jennifer Oulette. Feminine, full skirts in romantic patterns mixed with contrasting prints became a staple in Blair Waldorf’s Gossip Girl fashion. Adding to her preppy demeanor, Blair is often spotted in textured hosiery in interesting patterns and colors.

One of Blair’s staples is an endless collection of memorable outerwear. Houndstooth, plaid and embellished trench coats add to Blair’s creatively conservative attire. Rounding out Blair’s enviable Gossip Girl fashion is her equally breathtaking evening gowns. From sequin mini dresses to rosette embellished Valentino gowns, Blair has dresses for every taste level – and every occasion.

Where best friend Blair’s Gossip Girl style skews conservative, the Upper East side’s bad girl Serena VanDerWoodsen is sexy and revealing, and, I believe is responsible for the whole shirt as dress phenomenon.

With thigh high skirts, bodyconscious bandage dresses and cutout dresses, Serena VanDerWoodsen is anything but refined. Serena’s Gossip Girl Fashion often includes mini skirts, deeply cut necklines, and droolworthy accessories. Serena’s statement necklaces are museum worthy – often designed by on-the-rise jewelry designers using natural materials, and rare shapes and stones.

Serena’s shoe collection could also rival that of Carrie Bradshaw – a neverending display of Louboutin, Charlotte Olympia, Jimmy Choo, Brian Atwood and more. Serena popularized the now oft-seen ankle bootie with short dress, made popular by Gossip Girl fashion.

While Blair is known for her eveningwear, it’s Serena’s cocktail attire that leaves tongues wagging. Mini sequin skirts, bandage dresses, and decolletage baring cocktail dresses are responsible for Serena’s constant stream of equally as attractive men vying for her attention.

Playing second (and third) fiddle to the two Upper East side princesses is a cast of fashionistas who’ve changed over faster than last season’s trends. From Jenny Humphries’ rock-and-roll Gossip Girl fashion, which included distressed clothing, leather, denim, feathers and crystals, to Vanessa’s boho chic oversized kimono tops, colored prints and organically inspired jewelry. In more recent years, guest cameos from Hillary Duff added a sweet, everyday style, while Michelle Trachtenberg’s Georgina Sparks brought glamour and sophistication – tapping the same Gossip Girl style as Serena VanDerWoodsen.

Most recently the addition of Charlie, Serena’s cousin, brought a more casual glamour to Gossip Girl fashion. With colored jeans, and rich, cozy cashmere sweaters, in many ways Charlie is the most relateable of all the Gossip Girl style.

In every way except affordability.
